Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ is no longer the USA’s top-selling LP of all-time, having been usurped by legendary rockers, The Eagles.
While the 1982 pop masterpiece retains the top spot globally, with a staggering 47 million copies sold, in the States it only managed 33 million. The Eagles, meanwhile, have now been confirmed as hitting 38 million units with 1976’s ‘Their Greatest Hits’.
The numbers have been crunched by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and include physical copies and digital access. Ten song downloads or 1,500 streams equal the sale of one album. The Eagles’ classic 1977 long-player, ‘Hotel California’, has also just gone 26 times platinum, making it America’s third best-selling album of all time.
Whether the results mean we will see EDM big gun Steve Aoki remixing The Eagles, as he did with Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ last year, is another question. There was, however, widespread talk of a Broadway musical dedicated to the seminal band, which may or may not materialise before 2020, when a theatrical take on the King of Pop’s life is apparently hitting the New York stage.
