Hardwell booed for winning an Ibiza DJ Award over Carl Cox

Earlier this week, the dance music industry assembled at White Isle superclub Hï for the 20th edition of the Ibiza DJ Awards — but this year’s event wasn’t without some controversy.

Dutch don Hardwell picked up two awards at the 2017, an outcome some members of the crowd weren’t happy about. When the A-lister walked on stage to pick up the prize for Best International DJ — something he won over fellow nominees Carl Cox, Sven Väth and Deadmau5 — he was reportedly booed by members of the audience.

Hardwell also took home the prize in the Big Room House category, over acts like Martin Garrix, David Guetta, and (puzzlingly) Flume. The superstar DJ didn’t seem too fussed about the booing, thanking his fans on Twitter later for the support:

Carl Cox didn’t lose out entirely, as he picked up the award for Best Techno DJ, and his event Pure won Ibiza’s Event category. Other winners included Armin Van Buuren (of course) in the Trance category, Black Coffee for Deep House, and British producer Hannah Wants for Bass.
