Nic Fanciulli Join Carl Cox Revolution at Space - Interview
It's been a stellar year for Nic Fanciulli. Hyped way back in 2003 by MTV and Pete Tong as one of the most promising "Young Producers" out there, it never really materialised into the mainstream cover star hype that other DJs who were of similar age and who broke around the same time seem to garner. Sure, there were the cover-mounts and "duo" covers but whether it was the conservatively shy Fanciulli's choice to stay on the fringes or other we'll never know. That hype machine is starting again as he is one of the most musically talented DJs in the UK right now.
Even rags such as The Sun have declared him as the one that "clubbers are talking about" and Italian/British Fanciulli is one of only a handful of UK DJs on the mark of the European and underground sound of "now." It's difficult not to like this guy as a DJ and musician.
His sets have caught my ear several times this year. In one club in Dublin, 80 people turned up, but, no diva DJ tantrum was thrown as a consequence, rather happily playing to the few who barely left the floor for his whole set. At "Saved" in matter 2,500 danced away whilst voices on the floor screamed "Aww man that's a fucking choon" to a club in remote North West Ireland where he played to a floor of drunk Irish people on St Patricks Eve and accepted shots of tequila from the crowd graciously and with a smile.
"Saved" the label he runs is also moving forwards with their production ethic and choice. Picking up artists such as Mark Broom, Joel Mull and Par Grindvik along the way and releasing tracks such as "Materia", "Green Tea". Then there is the remixes he undertook last year which received positive acclaim from both clubbers and DJs "Lusine 2 Dots" and "Saints and Sinners."
Fanciulli has a long association with Ibiza and when I pressed him in an interview last year on the burgeoning door prices, he spoke on behalf of the clubbers. He also moved there one summer a few years ago to be "Inspired." So, let the romance continue with his nights that I am sure, will take clubbers to the floor in Space this Summer.
You've been travelling to Ibiza for over 10 years now, can you tell us a bit about your best and worst memories of the isle and why?
The worst memory and the best memory actually happened over the space of two days. It was Summer of 2006 and I was going to be playing with James Zabiela on the Space Terrace as part of our one + one tour. At the beginning of the night I was sat down with loads of mates watching Italy play France in the world cup final. We won so this was going to make the evening even better. I got to space and had one of the best nights! The next day on the way to the airport I stopped off at my manager's apartment, stuck my bags in and went downstairs for some breakfast. When we got back we found out that the place had been robbed! I had everything in there, my laptop, back up hard drives, pretty much everything as we had been travelling for months. To make things worse I had to hand in my renaissance compilation the next day and I had lost all the files when my stuff was stolen!!!
What are your thoughts on the Ibiza of the past and the Ibiza of present - what's got better and worse for you?
I've been going to Ibiza since I was 17. Nothing has come close to when I first went there, because it was all so new and fresh at the time. I think over the years it's become bigger and bigger and maybe that's the only fault as club owners and hotels have seen this and put up the prices.
Why do you think Ibiza has never lost its appeal to clubbers over the years?
Because it's where people can go to lose themselves, and not get judged.
What are your favourite clubs in Ibiza to play? Any small venues also you have played that are off the map a bit?
Space has to be my favourite place to play. I've had some great parties at Amnesia & Pacha, but Space would still be the place to play. Underground is always a nice place to go and listen to good music.
Special part of the island to you?
Cala Jondal. A few years back Lee Burridge and myself rented a villa here. We did it so we could get some music made over the summer. That didn't happen. Instead we had a lot of fun and got no work done.
Best place to eat and relax when you're not working in Ibiza?
Azzaro is a great place to relax. It's a nice boutique style hotel in the middle of Ibiza. The grounds are amazing and they have a great spa too. To eat it has to be a pizza place called Giardino. It's not fancy but the food there is perfect after a crazy night.
You moved your studio out there a few years ago, will we see a repeat of this again?
Yeah we came here two years ago and moved to a studio above Mambo's. I got a lot of work done but also missed a lot of flights. I think the idea is great but practicality wise, it wasn't the best idea.
What are your plans for Ibiza this year?
This summer I'm doing an exclusive residency for Carl Cox on Tuesdays at Space. I did it last year and loved it. They're great guys and Carl is one of the nicest people I've met.
You've a new label Deleted in the pipeline, what's coming up on that?
It basically is an outlet for all the tracks I've remixed or written that never came out on digital release. There are no set releases, more a case of when we find one or remember one.
