WMC 2010 Countdown: Steve Lawler
Forward thinking, groundbreaking, precedent setting: not just the true essence of progression, but an apt way to descibe world renowned DJ/producer Steve Lawler. That’s progression, not to be mistaken with the term progressive, music Steve Lawler’s often been associated with. Lawler is much more than a progressive house DJ. A child of the acid house generation, he’s been busy with the beats long before genres were but a twinkle in clubland’s eye. VIVA Music, Steve’s label, has been key to this progression.
The VIVA brand works as a culmination of everything that’s come before; illegal raves, to his residency at super club Cream or his Ibizan schooling. He’s remixed high profile artists and worked with world renowned imprints. He’s released some of the scene’s most collectible mix series such as the ‘Dark Drums’ ‘Lights Out’ and,‘VIVA’. Steve’s seen it all and experienced everything club culture can throw at him and its this experience that has fine-tuned his understanding of electronic music and its relationship with the dancefloor.

How many years have you been coming to WMC
I think around 12 years? My Annual Lights Out party is coming into its 9th year this year
Biggest change at WMC since you’ve been coming
Its no longer about "The Miami Tune!" its more about "The Miami"
Most memorable/craziest WMC experience you’ve had
Few years back now we did an after party after Lights Out, at a place called Cafeteria, it was insane madness we blacked out ALL windows. It went on for 2 days, new people kept coming and going, but there was a crew of us around 50 or so that wouldn't leave afraid we would die as soon as we stepped out into day light! I remember Yousef coming in on a bike and that stayed there for a day! Clive Henry getting through 100 wigs or something and a certain someone saying no names! ended up dancing naked for about 5 hours without even knowing!
What are your ideas for making the WMC a better conference
I think the WMC is good where it is, its the busiest it ever has been now. or at least every party I played at last year made it seem that way.. its not really about business I have never actually attended a conference, but its a good place for labels, promoters, artists to showcase what there about
Favorite place in Miami to eat/drink/chill and why
I actually like to drink and chill around the Shore Club lots of out side area's where you and you friends can be un-seen and left alone
Favorite Miami hotel
For me the Sagamore, Me, myself and the VIVa team I bring to conference every year get looked after here, we always get upgraded and free drinks at the bar
Artists you’re looking forward to checking out in Miami
To be honest I don't really check out anyone, I have 5 gigs at conference in 4 days.. the only gigs I go to are the ones I perform at
The best way to cure a Miami hangover
Like any hangover, have another drink...
Best clubbing moment of 2010 so far
There has been some amazing gigs this year already, BPM in Playa, Mexico was special, RAUM in Barcelona was amazing, VIVa in Moscow was messy to say the least! Playground festival in Sydney was surprisingly amazing.. there is never just one
What’s in store for 2010
Studio work, There are a string of remixes I have already done which will be coming out over the year for some great labels.. I am working on my album finally, I had a completely new studio built, which is more exiting than 100 Christmases at once! not doing as many gigs this year, taking some time out.. last year I worked my self into the ground with too much touring, I want to be in the studio more this year and I want to base my diary on 1 gig a week and be more selective and exclusive which we are doing.
